Blog # 2:Obama continues to push Job Plan

Remember that jobs plan that Obama was talking about the last time he addressed Congress? Well its been weeks since then and Obama has still made no head way on passing the bill what so ever. I'm getting ahead of myself though, let's talk about what ths jobs bill really is.

On the official website for the jobs bill (link posted below) Obama has mapped out some of the major issues that he wants to take on with this jobs bill. This inclunds creating incentives for small businesses to hire and grow from now into 2012, make investments that would prevent layoffs of as many as 280,000 teachers, provide opportunities for long-term unemployed veterans, and put Americans to work rebuilding roads, railways, bridges, and schools in need of repair implement the most sweeping reforms to the unemployment insurance system in 40 years to help those without jobs transition to the workplace, and expand the payroll tax cut, cutting workers payroll taxes in half next year. This provision will provide a tax cut of $1,500 to the typical family. Now although these ideas sound good I feel that the President might be repeatinghimself a little. Ideas such as continuing to invest in construction jobs has been done before and if you've been following my blog you would know that my view towards this proposal is a negative one. Don't get me wrong our infrastructure is falling apart and keeping jobs alive is a great idea but it feels a little like were putting America on life support. Once the money is all used up we'll have to put more and more money into construction until we either go broke or America has the newest roads in the whole world. The problem with construction jobs is that their a short term fix to a long term problem. We need to invest more in new industries, ones that can grow and create stable jobs that won't disappear when the project is over. But here's where Obama's bill gets good. Obama has promised to create new incentives for smaller bussiness. Small bussiness are the backbone of America after all and with out them our country wouldn't be what it is today, but I think Obama missed a huge point. Small bussiness are exactly what their refered to as, small. If we want major job growth we have to start investing in new manufacturing jobs and in new technology. If America doesn't invest in new ideas such as these we will find ourselves working as a service based economy, you know like an economy based on McDonalds and Taco Bell. With most American's working at such low paying jobs they will have less money to buy things with and with no one buying anything our economy will crumble. Pretty bad huh? The funniest (saddest) thing about this is I've heard people in both the Republican and Democratic party talk about expanding funding into new ideas such as new sources of energy and yet no one has made the first move, it's almost as if everyone's to afraid to pitch the idea. Another problem I have with this bill is tax cuts. We all love tax cuts but with the economy the way it is I predict that more people will hold on to the money then spend it. What we need is tax increases, mainly on the people who do have all the money. The wealthiest of Americans pay about 37% of their income in taxes today while during the great depression they were made to pay about 79% in taxes. What happened America? Why are we complaining so much about tax increases for the wealthy when their so low compared to what they used to be?

Well Obama if I had to give you a grade on your jobs bill I would give it a C because of it's repetitiveness and it's lack of creativity. Although this might be a passing grade it is not even close to what we need to fix our countries problems and besides I feel I'm being a bit generous with my C grade to Obama's Jobs Plan. If I am it's, because no one else out there has a plan I even partialy like. Well until we can get someone with enough brains (and balls) to pitch a real plan out there I guess we'll have to do with this plan.

As always,
Theurer
