Blog # 3: Iranian Assassination Plot
Earlier this week Iran sponsored a plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States. The conspiracy involved the Quds, a secret Iranian military unit, and a citizen of the Islamic Republic with a US passport. What seems like more of a movie plot than an actually scenario truly shows how fragile a situation the Middle East is in. But some comments on how the U.S. should reaction to this are worrying me more than the plot itself. Some U.S. officials are discussing if the use of military force is the correct response to this threat. I don't know about you but plunging America into another war, with a nuclear power such as Iran no less, while America continues to suffer from one of its worst financial declines in years doesn't sound like a smart idea to me. In fact it sounds almost suicidal. Another war is far from what America needs right now, but at the same time we cannot turn a blind eye to such an act of hostility. The best thing we can do is put more sanctions against Iran and discuss this problem at the U.N. as a global issue not just a fight between the U.S., Iran, and Afghanistan. Although permit damage continues to occur between U.S. and Afghan relations with Iran to declare war or to provoke them with military force would be an overbearing weight on this nation's economy and on the world economy as a whole.
