Current event five

Earlier this month a U.S. solider left his base late in the night to go on a killing spree of Afghan citizens which would claim 17 lives and injure about 5 more. After the U.S. solider, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, had finished his rampage he returned to base and turned himself in. This terrible situation follows a number of other terrible situations between the U.S. army and Afghanistan such as the desecration of Afghan bodies by U.S. forces and the previous death of Afghan citizens by the hand of a U.S. squad about a year ago. With this rise in tension comes a rise in anti-American sentiment which is definitely not helpful to the American's plan to move out of what they hope to be a stable Afghanistan in 2014. The deaths have already inspired citizen protests around Afghanistan while the U.S. army has agreed to pay a substantial amount of money to the families of the victims. Sadly most of the victims seem to be women and children. The army has also released some information on why this event may have occurred in the first place. Robert Bales has seen multiply tours in Afghanistan, been injured multiple times, seen friends of his killed and injured in front of him, and the day before his rampage he was assigned to another tour unexpectedly. The combination of these things created a horrible event that has further damaged our countries relationship with Afghanistan; let us hope that it can recover from this major blow.
