The above cartoon, by John Cole of the Scranton Times-Tribune, shows an elephant playing with a toy elf with the name Newt on it well a toy elf with the name Mitt sits on a shelf collecting dust. Under the toy elf named Mitt the caption reads "The elf (left on) the shelf". The elephant obviously represents the majoity of republican voters, while the doll the elephant represents presidential canidate Newt Gingrich who is as of late the new "Herman Cain" of the Republican party in that he is the new outsider republican canidate who are the republican to the far right are siding with. He is currently the front runner, but like Herman Cain may just be the Republican parties new "play thing" that will eventually be thrown aside. The other elf doll is Mitt Romney who, although has had a constant a rather large and constant support group, has been disliked by the other, more radical side of the republican party who continually look for outsiders such as Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich to replace him as the top canidate. The caption "The elf (left on) the shelf" may be commenting on Romney's more moderate stance on issues then his counterparts.
